Steven A. Camarota

Director of Research

Dr. Steven Camarota serves as the Director of Research for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, D.C.-based research institute that examines the consequences of legal and illegal immigration on the United States. The Center promotes an informed debate on comprehensive immigration reform by providing policymakers, academics, media, and citizens with fact-based information on immigration. Since 1999 Dr. Camarota has testified before Congress 29 times on the economic, fiscal, and demographic impact of immigration. In addition, for a number of years he was the lead researcher on a contract with the Census Bureau examining the quality of immigrant data in the American Community Survey.

Dr. Camarota’s research has been featured on the front pages of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today, as well as numerous other media outlets. He has written for a number of journals including the Public Interest, National Interest, Social Science Quarterly, Academic Questions, and Foreign Affairs. He has also published general interest pieces for such publications as the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, National Review, and the Dallas Morning News. He has appeared on radio and television news programs including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, National Public Radio, and NewsHour on PBS.

Dr. Camarota received a master’s degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and later earned a doctorate degree from the University of Virginia in public policy analysis. Download his CV.
