President Obama's long-lost Uncle Omar was picked up by law enforcement on August 24 while driving drunk in Massachusetts. His blood alcohol level was reportedly nearly twice the state's legal limit. He was charged with driving under the influence, driving to endanger, and failure to use a turn signal. He was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on an outstanding warrant – Uncle Omar was previously ordered deported to Kenya, but decided to stay in the U.S. anyhow, likely concluding that the United States doesn't take its own citizenship laws seriously. After all, his sister, Obama's "Aunti Zeituni", had also been ordered deported but was living as an illegal immigrant in Boston for years, in public housing no less.
I have friends and family living in Massachusetts, all within a short drive of Framingham, and there is no reason that they should have to risk a drunk-driving accident at the hands of an illegal alien who does not belong in the country and who has been previously ordered deported. Unfortunately, despite the risk created by drunk drivers (Obama's own Department of Transportation notes that 11,773 people died in drunk driving crashes in 2008) there does not appear to be any desire on the part of the administration to deport illegal aliens with DUI convictions, according to the new administrative amnesty scheme. Only after the alien kills or seriously injures another while drunk driving does deportation become somewhat of a priority. Americans shouldn't have to pay with their lives to get our immigration laws enforced, but that seems to be the way our system currently operates, as many recent examples show.
It's been over a week since the Obama administration announced its controversial "non-legislative amnesty" and we still have very little information about its scope, and no statement from the president explaining how he justifies handing out work permits to illegal immigrants at a time when millions of Americans are looking for jobs. Perhaps the media will start investigating and also inquire about the risk to public safety created by President Obama's decision to keep drunk-driving illegal aliens like Uncle Omar in the country.
