Denying License Plates to Illegals, Too
| Download a pdf of this Memorandum David North is a CIS Fellow. While many states in recent years have made it harder for illegal aliens to get driver’s licenses, too few states examine these documents when issuing license plates for cars. A survey of state motor vehicle agencies showed these practices: Only a few states, no more than four, issue driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, or provide inadequate screening systems. Latino Voting in the 2008 Election: Part of a Broader Electoral Movement
| The 2008 presidential election provided yet another opportunity to assess stability and change in the basic partisan commitments of voters. For almost 10 years now, leading GOP strategists have suggested that the party is on its way to making lasting inroads with Latino voters. Unfortunately, the 2008 results indicate that the party is no closer to this goal now than it was when it started. Exit polls on Election Night indicated that President-Elect Obama won 67 percent of the Latino vote; performing a bit better among Latino women (68 percent) than among Latino men (64 percent). (Results can be viewed on the CNN Election Center 2008 website at the following address, accessed December 15, 2008: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#USP00p1.) The Pew Research Center’s national survey taken the weekend before Election Day showed virtually the same results: 32 percent for McCain and 68 percent for Obama. Read more... |

When Tragedy Is the Hallmark of Failed Policy
| When Mexico has to arrest its own people for murders of U.S. law enforcement, it is sensible to conclude that current border policies are not only producing failure, but tragedies. Illegal border activity has grown increasingly violent and brazen over the past two years, including the notorious murders of rancher Robert Krentz in nearby Douglas and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry northwest of Nogales all within a few miles of the Mexican border. It is easy to see how a "do little to nothing" border policy emboldens the bullies and thugs that make up much of the current cast of illegal entrants along the border. Read more... |

Are There Really Jobs Americans Won’t Do?
| This analysis tests the often-made argument that immigrants do only jobs Americans don't want. If the argument is correct, there should be occupations comprised entirely or almost entirely of immigrants (legal and illegal). But Census Bureau data collected from 2009 to 2011, which allows for detailed analysis of all 472 separate occupations, shows that there were only a handful of majority-immigrant occupations. Thus, there really are no jobs that Americans won't do. Further, we estimated the share of occupations that are comprised of illegal immigrants, and found that there are no occupations in which the majority of workers are illegally in the country. Five Myths about Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants in Senate Bill
| President Obama and the Gang of Eight senators are repeating a number of talking points designed to elicit support for amnesty, or as they call it, "'earned legalization," for immigrants who have come to the United States illegally. The so-called "path to citizenship" is part of a bipartisan Senate immigration bill. Read more... |

Why Is the U.S. National Soccer Team So 'American?'
| If soccer is the world's sport, and America is the world's leading beacon for immigrants around the globe, why aren't immigrants making a bigger impact playing soccer for the Stars and Stripes? Consider the paucity of foreign born players on the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team. The team draws from a player pool of fifty eight men, only three (5%) of whom were born outside the U.S. Read more... |

Europe's Mujahideen: Where Mass Immigration Meets Global Terrorism
| Download this Backgrounder as a pdf Immigration and terrorism are independent social phenomena stemming from dissimilar causes and with radically different objectives. Immigration-Related Provisions of Senate and House Health Reform Bills
| Health reform legislation in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate will give illegal aliens access to taxpayer-funded health care well beyond emergency medical treatment.
