Nursing and Teaching are Jobs Americans Won't Do?
| Edited by Jessica Vaughan. Lost in the debate over H-1B visas - which are typically portrayed as going mainly to high-tech or computer programming workers - is the fact that certain American colleges, universities, and medical facilities are also heavy users of this program. According to a searchable list of H-1B employers recently posted on Computer World magazine’s web site, a number of U.S. educational and health care institutions each sponsored hundreds of guest workers in 2008. Using this database, we identified 300 universities and 318 colleges that were approved for a total of 5,755 foreign workers. In addition we identified 465 public school systems, approved for 1,522 workers. Finally, we found 379 hospitals, and 948 health or medical employers who hired a combined 4,787 workers. A Trifecta of Non-Immigrant Worker Programs
| There have been three little-noticed (in the United States) actions recently about the non-immigrant worker programs that have denied so many jobs to American workers. A U.S. shipbuilding firm in the South has been charged in our courts with "enslaving Indian workers"; a brave American lawyer in the North is trying to use the class action approach to attack the H-1B program; and a major U.S. user of the H-1B program is laying off U.S. workers while seeking to expand the flows of H-1Bs. GOP Needs a Rethink on Immigration: Shift the tone.
| from National Review Online, January 8, 2009 As the 111th Congress convenes, Republicans need to rethink their immigration policy. This isn’t because of the supposed lessons of last November’s elections. Despite his herculean efforts at passing Ted Kennedy’s amnesty bill, Sen. McCain’s share of the Hispanic vote was in the usual range for Republicans — though lower than the Republican share in 2004, just like among every other category of voter. He did lose, after all. And if no Hispanics at all had voted, Sen. Obama would still have won. Read more... |
