Size Matters: Analysis of Census Bureau's Population Projections

By Steven A. Camarota, August 14, 2008

While the Census Bureau’s press release accompanying its new population projections emphasizes the importance of the country’s changing racial composition, this is almost certainly not the most important finding. The new report shows a U.S. population in 2050 that is 135 million larger than it is today. This could have profound implications for the environment and quality of life in the United States in the future. Immigration policy is the primary factor driving population growth. Read more...

You Can't Make This Stuff Up

By Mark Krikorian, August 13, 2008

Breaking news from the Houston Chronicle:

While many view the contentious border fence as a government fiasco, an animal rights group sees a rare opportunity.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government: Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol.

Hartford, CT - Sanctuary City?

By Jessica Vaughan, August 13, 2008

If Hartford mayor Eddie Perez signs an ordinance sent to him by the city council, the Connecticut state capital will be the latest to join the list of cities that are obstructing the identification of criminal aliens, and almost certainly endangering their residents in the process. (See .) The ordinance forbids city police from arresting illegal aliens they encounter who are the subject of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) administrative warrant. Read more...

Counterfeiting the 'E' in E-Passports: The Top Reason Why a Heist of 3,000 UK E-Passports Matters

By Janice Kephart, August 8, 2008

Last week I wrote about the top ten reasons why a heist of 3,000 blank UK e-passports matters. In that piece, I laid out the many reasons why this heist is a concern to the US, mostly stemming from how these e-passports – even assuming the blank chips that hold biographical and biometric data are not susceptible to counterfeit – still present multiple opportunities for undercover terrorist travel and identity theft. Tolerating Illegal Child Labor

By Jon Feere, August 7, 2008

Once a business is permitted to violate immigration laws in the workplace, there’s no telling how many more laws will fall by the wayside.

ICE’s recent workplace enforcement at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa uncovered the fact that the company was employing hundreds of illegal aliens. ICE has called this “the largest criminal worksite enforcement operation ever in the United States.” Read more...

More Fallout from Mass Immigration

By John Wahala, August 6, 2008

A recent study published in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine finds that immigrant children are less likely to be physically active than their native-born peers. Close to 20 percent of foreign-born children get no physical exercise and 56 percent do not participate in organized sports. The results vary significantly among ethnic groups. Read more...

Worst Person in the Congress?

By Mark Krikorian, August 6, 2008

How about replacing Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World" contest (which you'd think I would have won by now because of my book) with the "Worst Person in the Congress." I know there's a lot of competition, but my nomination for today would be Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.). Read more...

War Against Labor Day?

By Mark Krikorian, August 4, 2008

The union at Tyson's Shelbyville, Tenn., chicken plant has negotiated a new contract that adds Eid al Fitr as a paid holiday for all employees, and drops Labor Day. A few observations: First, just complaining about illegal immigration won't do — this change was made to accommodate Somali and other Muslim (legally admitted) refugees, sought out by Tyson (and other meatpackers) as an alternative to illegal Hispanic workers. Top Ten Reasons Why a Heist of 3,000 Blank UK Passports Matters

By Janice Kephart, July 30, 2008

The UK Guardian report today of an old-fashioned criminal heist of a van carrying 3,000 just-printed blank UK passports and "vignettes" (used for visa inserts) from Oldham, England (just outside of Manchester) southwest to London should give us pause here in the United States. UK law enforcement says these passports have a street value of about $5 million, or over $3,000 each. Read more...
