A friend in suburban Houston writes about the aftermath of Ike:
In my very spoiled town, the locals had no problem opening side streets (with chain saws), clearing driveways (ditto), and cleaning lawns on their own.
Sugar Land is normally the quintessential suburb where most lawn work is done by illegals.
The local citizenry had no problem rising to the occasion when the need arose.

I still think Mickey Kaus is right that a President McCain would be more likely to succeed in pushing amnesty through Congress than a President Obama, but reader Patrick has an interesting, opposite perspective:
The best thing to happen to anti-amnesty Republicans in Congress is the rise of McCain/Palin bringing back the GOP 'brand' and the increasing the generic GOP ballot.

As we remember the lives of those lost seven years ago today, it is important to reflect upon our security failures in the context of immigration so that we may prevent future acts of terrorism.
The Center has produced extensive research on the nexus between immigration and terrorism. All of our national security-related publications are available on-line.

Before the recent ICE raid at the Howard Industries transformer plant in Laurel, MS, that led to the arrest of some 600 illegal aliens – making it the largest workplace immigration enforcement action in US history – the ICE raid at the slaughterhouse in Postville, IA, had the dubious distinction of holding first place. Senator John McCain’s choice of Governor Sarah Palin for vice president surprised most of the punditry, who are now chortling with glee over what they perceive as her lack of sophistication. What they actually deride is what the McCain camp is gambling will be her greatest strength—a life deeply rooted in a community far away from the corruption of Washington. Far from a liability, such localism is what has defined America and what most Americans embrace. And Senator McCain is hoping she can embody this sentiment. Read more...

I have been using E Verify for over 3 years. It takes away all of the guess work in determining if documents presented are valid or not. Being close to the border you would be surprised at the amount of fake IDs that look real until they are run through the program. For the first time in my 20+ years in HR I am comfortable in knowing that we are hiring only employees who are authorized to work in the United States.
Ginny Priborsky, online comment in response to "E-Verify: Is it about to die?," HR Morning, July 11, 2008

Washington (JTA) -- The immigration raid on the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa, the largest kosher plant in the country, caught most American Jews completely off-guard.
Since the raid in May, which resulted in the arrest of nearly 400 illegal workers, additional serious allegations have emerged against the plant owned by the Brooklyn-based Rubashkin family, including inhumane working conditions, egregious violations of child-labor laws, sexual harassment of female workers and multiple workplace safety infractions.
