A Strategy for Winning the Immigration Battle

By Ronald W. Mortensen, August 24, 2010

Previous blogs have discussed how those of us who oppose illegal immigration have largely failed to win the battle in spite of years of effort. We have allowed ourselves to be defined by the opposition and we have all too often adopted tactics that validate their portrayal of us. But perhaps most importantly, we have generally failed to put a human face on our arguments and we have seldom appealed to the emotions of the public and policy makers. Read more...

Losing the Immigration Battle – Failed Strategies

By Ronald W. Mortensen, August 16, 2010

In my previous blog, I argued that despite years of effort, we have failed to make the significant gains that we would have hoped for in the battle over illegal immigration. In fact, the best we can say is that we have held the proponents of illegal immigration in check and fought them to a standstill over amnesty.

This blog looks at the reasons behind our lack of success. Read more...

Losing the Battle on Illegal Immigration?

By Ronald W. Mortensen, August 9, 2010

Opponents of illegal immigration are often frustrated that the public remains ambivalent about illegal immigration and that the political, business, religious, civic and media elites continue to unconditionally support illegal aliens.

Those of us who oppose illegal immigration spend an inordinate amount of time fighting defensive battles.

We fight to prevent the passage of illegal-alien-friendly legislation at the state, local and federal levels.

We fight to overturn laws and policies that grant illegal aliens special benefits.

We fight to secure the border. Read more...

Illegal Aliens: A Sense of Entitlement

By Ronald W. Mortensen, July 15, 2010

After years of granting special treatment to illegal aliens, the state of Utah finally got around to accounting for all of the income earned by illegal aliens in a given family when determining eligibility for food stamps.

As ridiculous as it may seem, until now the state did not capture the total earnings of illegal immigrant families, which resulted in illegal aliens qualifying for food stamps for their American-born children while American citizens with the same total income were being denied food stamps for their children. DREAM Act Equates Military Service with College

By Ronald W. Mortensen, July 13, 2010

The proposed DREAM act offers legal permanent residency to children who were brought to the United States illegally by their parents.

Proponents argue that the children are here through no fault of their own and should be given the opportunity to make a life for themselves in the United States if they will either enlist for two years in the military or complete two years of college.

I have one major question about this proposed act: Is it fair to equate military service and college attendance? Read more...

Los Angeles City Council Hypocrisy Shines Through

By Ronald W. Mortensen, June 28, 2010

The Los Angeles City Council was quick to vote to boycott Arizona because of its new immigration law.

The Arizona law will encourage racial profiling, huffed the council's Resolution.

It's like Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, puffed Council members. Read more...

Sanctuary Cities Succumb to Blackmail

By Ronald W. Mortensen, June 11, 2010

"Jailed illegal immigrants pose policy dilemma" reads the Los Angeles Times headline.

The policy dilemma that sanctuary cities face is self-imposed. Simply put, the dilemma is: Do they support and help uphold all of the laws of the United States, including its immigration laws, and turn illegal aliens who have been jailed over to the federal authorities for deportation, or do they ignore immigration laws and release illegal alien criminals back into the community in order to maintain good relations with the illegal-alien community? Salt Lake City Police Chief Protecting Illegal Aliens

By Ronald W. Mortensen, June 3, 2010

Not too long ago, Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank was in Washington along with other big-city police chiefs. They met with Attorney General Eric Holder to complain about how the newly enacted Arizona law (SB 1070) would inevitably lead to racial profiling of illegal aliens and how unfair it was.

So, just how fair is Chief Burbank? Read more...

Forget Diplomatic Immunity -- How about 'Illegal-Alien Immunity'?

By Ronald W. Mortensen, May 24, 2010

Most Americans have heard of diplomatic immunity -- it provides accredited diplomats with protection from legal action in the foreign countries where they live and work.

Seizing on this concept, illegal immigrants and their supporters now claim what amounts to "illegal-alien immunity" for millions of foreign nationals who live and work unlawfully in the United States. Read more...

No Special Session to Gut Utah's Child Identity Theft Bill

By Ronald W. Mortensen, May 19, 2010

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has canceled plans to call a special session of the Utah State Legislature in order to essentially gut SB251 which was passed by the 2010 legislative session.

SB251 requires all Utah employers with 15 or more employees to use an employment verification system for all new hires after July 1, 2010. Read more...

GOP Convention Deals Blow to Utah's Illegal Immigration Advocates

By Ronald W. Mortensen, May 11, 2010

Utah's Republican Party conventions have not been good to elected officials who have consistently sided with the advocates for illegal aliens.

U.S. Sen. Robert Bennett and two senior state legislators were denied the opportunity to even run for the seats they currently hold. Two state legislators with spotty records on immigration-related issues were forced into primary election contests and four other legislators whom illegal aliens counted as friends retired from the Utah House of Representatives. Why the Tea Party Movement Must Oppose Illegal Immigration and Amnesty

By Ronald W. Mortensen, May 4, 2010

While I was working on legislation designed to address the problems associated with illegal alien driven, child identity theft in Utah, a supporter of the "Tea Party" movement asked me why I was so concerned about illegal immigration. "After all, aren't illegal immigrants just good, hard working people who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families," he asked.

I responded that illegal immigration is a direct to threat to constitutionally limited government, the rule of law, free markets, private property, individual freedom, and fiscal responsibility. Read more...

New Arizona Law Puts Pressure on Utah

By Ronald W. Mortensen, April 26, 2010

When Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona signed the toughest state illegal immigration law in the nation on April 23, 2010, it made it imperative that Utah's newly enacted child identity theft protection law (SB251) take effect as scheduled on July 1, 2010, without any changes. Read more...

Failure to Uphold Immigration Laws Leads to the Death of a Deputy Sheriff

By Ronald W. Mortensen, January 25, 2010

During the past several months, I have commented on the failure of law enforcement officials to enforce the nation's immigration laws, thereby giving illegal alien criminals an advantage that they should not have.

Law enforcement officials argue that they have to give illegal aliens a pass for violating immigration laws in order to gain their confidence and support. While this may work in some cases, it also leaves violent, criminal illegal aliens free to go about their business. Read more...

Police Chiefs – Justifying Illegal-Alien Crime

By Ronald W. Mortensen, December 9, 2009

The ability of law enforcement officers to justify the criminal acts of illegal aliens, while at the same time making them out to be victims, never ceases to amaze me.

I recently wrote about the outgoing Los Angeles Chief of Police’s concern for maintaining good relations with the illegal-alien community at the expense of law-abiding American citizens and legal residents. Read more...

In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens -- Felonies and False Hopes

By Ronald W. Mortensen, December 1, 2009

Why does Utah, among other states, encourage students who are illegally in the United States to commit multiple, job-related felonies and why does it create false hopes for these young people?

The answer to these questions can be found in Utah's in-state tuition program.

In 2002, the Utah state legislature passed legislation authorizing in-state tuition for illegal aliens with the intent that it would not enter into force until the federal DREAM Act was passed by Congress and signed by the president. Read more...

By Ronald W. Mortensen, November 19, 2009

Recently, more than 1,200 janitors were fired in Minnesota when they were unable to provide ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) with proof of their legal status in the United States. In fact, according to John Keller, executive director of the nonprofit Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, the vast majority of the 1,250 fired workers turned out to be "undocumented." Read more...

By Ronald W. Mortensen, November 5, 2009

By Ronald W. Mortensen, October 5, 2009
