Open borders as job security

By Jon Feere, February 27, 2009

The American Lawyer Daily has an interesting piece illustrating how immigration law firms push for more immigration simply as a means of revenue, without any concern for the impact on American society. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. The article begins: Read more...

Bringing 'Change' to the Census?

By Jon Feere, February 11, 2009

Illegal-immigration enthusiasts at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) may be partially responsible for President Obama's recent decision to force the U.S. Census to report directly to the White House. According to Congressional Quarterly, the decision was made after NALEO issued a press release questioning the qualification of Obama's GOP appointee, saying: Read more...

Gangs responsible for 80% of crime?

By Jon Feere, February 2, 2009

The government is reporting that gangs are responsible for up to 80 percent of crime in communities across the nation. While the report is not yet public, one central conclusion is that street gangs are growing in size and strength. Many are transitioning from street-level distributors of narcotics to cartel-sized entities that are capable of competing with major drug-trafficking organizations. Increased violence accompanies this trend. Read more...

Obama’s Immigration Agenda

By Jon Feere, January 22, 2009

President Obama has released a five-step plan for tackling immigration. On some points, he’ll find plenty of support from the public; Americans overwhelmingly support secured borders and the reduction of incentives to enter illegally (of which there are many). On other agenda items (e.g. mass amnesty), he’ll waste political capital and have nothing to show for it at the end of his term. If Obama starts with the politically-practical items, the new president will find much success. He seems to already know this: during the primary debates, Obama promised that border security and ending illegal employment would be a prerequisite for amnesty.

Here is the official plan from whitehouse.gov: Read more...

Homeland Security: USA

By Jon Feere, January 7, 2009

Tattooed gang members, drug smugglers, human traffickers, and people emitting radiation from their bodies. These are just a few of the types to cross paths with DHS officials in ABC’s new reality series, “Homeland Security: USA.” In the same way that Fox’s long-running COPS has highlighted the day-to-day drama facing local law enforcement, this series promises to provide Americans a sobering look at the constant assault on our nation’s ports and borders. Changing Change.org

By Jon Feere, January 7, 2009

The website Change.org includes the following quote at the top of its homepage:

“I will open the doors of government and ask you to be involved in your own democracy again.” – President-elect Barack Obama

Launched in 2007, the site claims to be aimed at “empowering movements for social change,” and is partnered with a variety of open-border groups such as LaRaza and the SEIU. It apparently is not officially affiliated with Obama’s Change.gov website. Read more...

Immigrant Gangs: Pols still don’t get it

By Jon Feere, January 5, 2009

In their quest for open borders, many politicians still fail to understand the link between immigration and the growth of gangs.

The latest example is chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.) – who happens to have one of the worst records on immigration enforcement. In the next Congress, Baca plans to introduce an initiative to fight gangs. It sounds like a great idea, but if his past efforts are a guide, it’s likely that this initiative will focus only on prevention programs akin to the anti-drug program known as D.A.R.E. Read more...

Workplace Enforcement Benefiting Teens and Seniors

By Jon Feere, September 26, 2008

ICE’s recent workplace enforcement efforts “have brought seniors and teens back in favor with many employers,” according to the founder of two career-building websites.

“U.S. born seniors and teens are perfect candidates for holiday jobs that need to be filled. Many seniors are just looking for something to do and teens need experience and a little extra money for their necessities,” says Renee Ward, founder of ‘Seniors4Hire.org’ and ‘Teens4Hire.org.’ Read more...

MS-13 Involved in N.J. Slayings

By Jon Feere, September 18, 2008

Last year, Newark city officials downplayed the immigration and gang connections in the brutal execution-style slayings of three New Jersey students. Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20, were lined up against a schoolyard wall and shot in the back of the head. A fourth victim, Natasha Aeriel, survived after being sexually assaulted and shot in the face. Read more...

Illegal Immigration and Identity Theft

By Jon Feere, September 12, 2008

Evidence that the attrition-through-enforcement strategy is working continues to mount. Smithfield Foods, the focus of two ICE workplace enforcement measures last year, has joined the voluntary “ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers” (IMAGE) program which, among other things, requires businesses to enroll in E-Verify. Another Court OK’s Border Fence

By Jon Feere, September 5, 2008

U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo, a G.W. Bush appointee, recently denied a preliminary injunction request aimed at preventing the construction of the Department of Homeland Security’s planned border fence that will stretch approximately 100 miles from Columbus, New Mexico, to Fort Hancock, Texas. By Jon Feere, August 27, 2008

The Los Angeles City Council has recently approved an ordinance that requires all new home improvement stores in their jurisdiction to construct day laborer centers on their private property as a prerequisite for a business license. The stores will be required to provide shelter, drinking water, bathrooms, and trash cans for any and all day laborers who happen upon the company’s property. Read more...

Tolerating Illegal Child Labor

By Jon Feere, August 7, 2008

Once a business is permitted to violate immigration laws in the workplace, there’s no telling how many more laws will fall by the wayside.

ICE’s recent workplace enforcement at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa uncovered the fact that the company was employing hundreds of illegal aliens. ICE has called this “the largest criminal worksite enforcement operation ever in the United States.” Read more...

Congress Mulls Lifting HIV Ban

By Jon Feere, July 25, 2008

Under the direction of President Bush, Congress is on the verge of authorizing $48 billion for an AIDS/malaria/tuberculosis program dubbed by the Associated Press as the “most ambitious foreign public health program ever launched by the United States.” Originally launched in 2003, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is designed to reduce the spread of infectious diseases throughout the world. Obama and McCain at La Raza

By Jon Feere, July 15, 2008

Regardless of which candidate wins in November, be prepared for the National Council of La Raza to announce a victory for mass, illegal alien amnesty. La Raza will likely announce that the outcome (whether it be a President Obama or McCain) “indicates America’s support for comprehensive reform.” Of course, poll after poll after poll indicates quite the opposite.

The following are immigration-related excerpts from the Obama and McCain speeches at La Raza’s annual conference this week. Read more...

Judge: Social Security Cards Not Valid ID

By Jon Feere, July 10, 2008

Federal Judge Harry S. Mattice Jr. (Tennessee Eastern District Court), a former Republican Party chairman and Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney, has called into question the validity of describing a Social Security card as a form of identification. He was presiding over a case resulting from an ICE workplace enforcement operation earlier this year at five different poultry processing plants operated by Pilgrim’s Pride. ICE arrested 311 foreign nationals, 91 of whom were charged with criminal violations. Read more...

Supreme Court OK's Border Fence

By Jon Feere, June 23, 2008

The Supreme Court today rejected a plea by environmental groups to prevent Homeland Security from constructing part of the pending U.S.-Mexico border fence. The White House had made use of a statutory provision in the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (provided via amendment by 2005’s REAL ID Act) which reads, in part: “[n]otwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall have the authority to waive all legal requirements such Secretary, in such Secretary’s sole discretion, determines necessary to ensure expeditious construction of the barriers and roads.” In other words, Congress gave the White House direct authority to waive various laws, such as environmental protection statutes, when securing our borders. 9th Circuit: Continue Employing Suspected Illegal Aliens

By Jon Feere, June 18, 2008

In their quest to continue the unlawful employment of illegal aliens, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) found support from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this week. At issue was the firing of 33 individuals with mismatched Social Security numbers who had been employed by Aramark, a large professional services company. Read more...
